Šiauliai at the End of the Second World War

When the Second World War was approaching its end, the location of establishment of Šiauliai became fatal again. From the very beginning of the city’s establishment, the city was criss-crossed by strategically important roads, first trade routes; later, transportation and military. At the end of the Second World War, Šiauliai was attacked again, this time particularly violently. German forces did not want to release the territory that was so important and needful to them. Both sides fought with no intention to give up. However, after the capitulation and withdrawal of Germans, the city was all ruined, as the Soviet Army with its aviation, seeking to break down the resistance of the Nazis, bombarded the city without remorse. It is said that after these attacks, the city was burning for three days. Šiauliai became the most ruined city of Lithuania during the war. The city centre, in which almost no buildings were left, suffered particularly. About 85 percent of all city buildings (half of them – industrial buildings) were touched by war or completely destroyed. There was no electricity in the city, water supply and the economy of the area was destroyed. First, the rebuilding and renewal of the railway junction, related enterprises and the city’s public transport were initiated as this was needful to meet the needs of the war that had not yet ended. Later, the restoration of another part of the city was undertaken.
